Arctura Water Tower
Location: Oestersund, Sweden
Architect: Sweco FFNS
Date: 2010
Project Type: Public Buildings and Arts, Retail and Restaurants
The Arctura water tower holds 6.8 million gallons of boiling water that is used to heat homes in the surrounding region. The 215-foot high structure, wrapped in an almond-shaped, energy-efficient veil of stainless steel, stands on a hill above the local ski station of Östersund. A restaurant with this spectacular view has been installed on top of the tower. Lighting experts LjusDesign were engaged to design the tower's illumination. This light design, which is projected onto the metal fabric by means of LED fixtures, was inspired by Arcturus, the 'provincial star' of Jämtland. The lighting program adheres to astronomical time.
